I’m late to the party, and really only joining for half. Today’s Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by The Broke and the Bookish) asks us about the top books on our summer TBR list, and that coincides quite nicely with Cathy’s #20BooksofSummer challenge (although I am only doing 10 because I have become the world’s slowest reader). Without further ado, here are the books on my list:
Unfamiliar Fishes, Sarah Vowell (read)
Astonish Me, Maggie Shipstead
My Antonia, Willa Cather (read)
My Brilliant Friend, Elena Ferrante (read)
Mind of Winter, Laura Kasischke
Annihilation, Jeff Vandermeer (read)
After I’m Gone, Laura Lippman
Cleopatra, Stacy Schiff
Black Water Rising, Attica Locke (DNF)
Dirty Love: Stories, Andre Dubus III
False Mermaid, Erin Hart
A nice mix of fiction and nonfiction, one classic, some mysteries…but lighter reads overall. I had grand plans to tackle Wolf Hall, East of Eden, and Cloud Atlas this summer , but given my slow pace those might have ended up being the only books I read. I’d like to make a bit more of a dent in my TBR pile, so we’ll see how it goes! What’s on your list?
Loved Cleopatra…No Wolf Hall? Yikes.
Nice choices Priscilla! I read Black Water Rising last year so will be keen to hear what you think. I’ll link your list up to the Master Post later today.
Thanks Cathy! I meant to get this post up at the beginning of the month, but a big work project knocked me off course.
Interesting list! I hope you get a chance to check out Wolf Hall at some point, it’s such a fascinating read, I loved the writing too.
I didn’t put it in my TTT list for this week because I wasn’t sure if I would get around to it this summer but I finally got around to buying Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend and its subsequent books. Looking forward to finally reading it (soon-ish)!
Great list, hope you enjoy reading all those books for the reading challenge 🙂 My TTT
A lot of those are new to me – have a great Summer! My post is here: https://lipsyy.wordpress.com/2015/06/16/top-ten-tuesday-top-ten-books-on-my-tbr-list-this-summer/
I may try it but I’d have to read it along with other books. Maybe with the nonfiction? I tend to be a one at a time reader, though!
Lianne, I am looking forward to My Brilliant Fried. I have heard so many wonderful things about it. I admit I read the first few pages and it looks very promising! Happy reading and thanks for visiting!
I didn’t love BLACK WATER RISING. MIND OF WINTER sounds really good, though.
Happy TTT!
I don’t know most of the books on your list, but keep hearing great things about Annihilation, and I love Sarah Vowell. East of Eden is wonderful, but definitely a time commitment, as is Cloud Atlas. Hope you get to them eventually!
Susan, Laura Kasischke’s novel Suspicious River is also very good–but be warned, it’s very dark.
Curlygeek, I hope to get to both of those at least by the end of the year. Cooler weather always makes me want to read things that are longer or deeper.
A Mind of Winter disappointed me horribly — it had the kind of twist that I am particularly unfond of. But in general, it looks like an excellent list! I am planning to read Annihilation sometime this summer too.
I loved My Brilliant Friend, though I haven’t gotten to the sequels yet. And Willa Cather is a perennial favorite. Wolf Hall does take some time to get through…maybe save it for winter? Enjoy your reading!
Jenny, I am looking forward to reading Annihilation, and I’m hoping to break my bad habit of only reading the first book in a trilogy and read the other two this year as well!
Lory, I am so ashamed about that Willa Cather novel, because I won it in a giveaway another book blog about five or six years ago. I finally moved it to a shelf where I have to look at it every day so I would be reminded constantly!
